"Are Telecourses For You?" Take this self-quiz:

How to Take a Telecourse - Telecourses are generally designed for active people who want to fit their education into a busy schedule. To complete a telecourse successfully, you’ll need to plan in advance how to schedule your viewing, reading, and study time. Buy the textbook, the student guide, and any other materials required by your instructor before the course begins. As you preview these materials, estimate how much time that you’ll need to complete the assignments for each lesson. Write the dates of quizzes, midterm(s), review sessions, the final and special projects on your calendar so you can plan time to prepare for them.

Student Guide - The telecourse student guide is an important component of Mastering the College Experience. It is your "road map" for the telecourse, and serves as a critical bridge between the textbook and the video lessons. Start each lesson with this book, and follow the step-by-step instructions for reading, viewing and completing exercises. It is important that you complete the assignments in the order they are listed to make the most effective use of your study time.

Textbook - Mastering the College Experience is based on the leading textbook in the field of student success: Becoming a Master Student, 9th edition, by Dave Ellis (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2000). The content of the textbook parallels the content of the video programs, but you will not always be required to read an entire chapter for each lesson. This student guide will tell you which pages to read and in what sequence.

Video Programs - The 26 half-hour video lessons reinforce and elaborate on the information in the student guide and textbook. A telecourse is a learning "system." You’ll benefit by studying all components of this system--the telecourse student guide, the textbook, and the video lessons. If the video lessons are broadcast or cablecast in your area at inconvenient times, feel free to record them on your home video cassette recorder for later viewing. Your local campus library or learning center may also have tapes available for loan or on-site viewing. You may find it enjoyable and instructive to watch the videos with other people, but save the talking and discussion until the programs are over. That way, you won’t miss important information. After reading the text and viewing the program, take a few minutes to write a brief summary of what you learned, the meaning of key concepts and terms. The questions listed at the end of the Overview will help guide your writing.

Note-taking tip: We recommend that you watch each program through once and take notes during a second viewing for better comprehension.
