About Coast Learning Systems
Coast Learning Systems
is the production, marketing, and distribution division of Coastline Community
College, and an award-winning producer of instructional media since 1973.
Coast Learning Systems also markets and distributes its courses
worldwide. Coastline is one of the few educational institutions that designs,
produces, offers, markets, and distributes distance learning courseware. It is uniquely
qualified to develop innovative and flexible instructional systems that
are interesting and effective in serving the needs of college students,
people in corporate training programs, and learners in various other institutional
settings. Telecourse production is accomplished in cooperation with KOCE-TV,
Channel 50, the Coast Community College District's local
PBS station, which also broadcasts to Coastline students. All courses are developed under the supervision of a National Academic Advisory Team representing community colleges and universities from all over the United States.
A Pioneering Commitment to Innovation for Educational Effectiveness and Efficiency
In 1972, the Coast Community College District
(in Orange County, California) produced its first college-level educational
television series. The term telecourse had not yet been coined, but the
District had a commitment to explore new modes of delivering education.
Telecourses and other media-based instruction clearly had the potential
to reach new students and increase enrollments.
Coast Learning Systems: A Leader in Distance Learning
Coast Learning Systems has produced some of
the most widely used telecourses, including such award-winning series
as Psychology: The Human Experience, Dollar$ &
Sense (personal finance), Faces of Culture (anthropology),
and UNIVERSE: The Infinite Frontier (astronomy). Series
produced by Coast Learning Systems have been offered nationally and internationally
by hundreds of colleges and universities via PBS stations and cable networks,
and by videocassette, by CD-ROM aboard U.S. Navy submarines and surface
ships, and in a wide variety of business and training settings.
Course Production
Coast Learning Systems' experience and tradition
of excellence is reflected by collegial, collaborative relationships with
such leading agencies as PBS/Adult Learning Service, KCET-Los
Angeles, WNET-New York, the British Broadcasting Corporation
(BBC), the U.S. Navy, Dallas TeleLearning, Great Plains
Network (GPN), and INTELECOM (Southern California Consortium).
Such noted educational publishers as McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin, HarperCollins,
Harcourt Brace, Worth Publishers, Thomson Learning, and Kendall/Hunt have
participated in Coast Learning Systems projects. Renowned scholars
and expert teachers have appeared in or been consultants on Coast video
lessons or authored course print materials. Portions of many telecourses
are shot on location to achieve the authenticity evoked by depicting people
and subject matter in true-to-life settings.
